Day One: A vote for peace - and science

Today's good news story has to be the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and Al Gore, in recognition of their work on climate change. Finally, this critical issue is getting the attention it deserves. And there's a reason to be hopeful, if ever I heard one!

Hi Emma,

Agree that this is a good thing. What's the view of the 'Nobel Prize' in the US?

Check out my friend Jeremy's blog - he regularly posts 'reasons to love Nigeria' as an exercise in the force of positive thinking.

Thanks Saul

I checked out Jeremy's blog - he certainly seems to stimulate a lot of debate, which is good to see.

Re the Nobel Prize: well, I've been watching this since the announcement. There was front page coverage initially, though not exactly a 'big splash'. Now there is little discussion, though this week's Newsweek carried an opinion piece on how if we were to respond to the urgings of climate change campaigners, then the reductions in economic growth would lead to much more suffering than the effects of climate change. It ended with the words 'Nobel Peace Prize indeed!'...

So, in short, not much has changed explicitly as a result of the prize. Gore personally was the focus of much of the related reporting. The main interest is still whether he will run for the Democrat candidacy. A bit of a case of 'IPCC who?' really!
